Tai Hei shakuhachi 1.8, Monty Levenson
Japanese 1.8 shakuhachi, the traditional reference size (about 54.5 cm, tuned in D), handmade by Monty Levenson of the Tai Hei Shakuhachi workshop. Made of torachiku, the tiger bamboo of Shikoku, recognisable by the purplish-brown mottling that gives it its striped look. Five holes, bevelled blowing edge and bound joints. Monty Levenson is a recognised maker and Tai Hei flutes are hand-crafted instruments played by shakuhachi musicians and teachers. It plays and records: for a soundtrack, for a meditation or dojo scene, and as a Japanese set-dressing piece on a tatami or a low table.
