West African djembe of traditional construction: goblet-shaped shell carved from a single piece of wood, goatskin head tensioned by a rope and ring system, and a foot with carved motifs. Played with the hands, it gives the three classic sounds, the bass from the centre, the tone from the edge and the dry slap, loud enough for an outdoor circle. Plays and records. Suited to soundtracks and studio percussion, to a drum-circle, beach or music-class scene, and as a decorative piece in a living room with a travelled look.
